Global Recognition
She was a symbol of human kindness and dedication, honored by many countries that had been touched by her compassion. Throughout her life and her hard work she received many awards including the honorable Peace Prize in 1979 for the effort to overcome poverty. Even then her humanity and simplicity were shown when she asked to be given the money to the poor instead of having the ceremonial banquet in her honor. Among other prices she received the Kennedy Price in 1971, the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize, The United States Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. For the effort to promote peace, humanity, and brotherhood among people she received the 1978 Balzan Prize and the Nehru Prize in 1972 (“Mother Teresa” New World Encyclopedia).
